Thika is in Kiambu County (not Nairobi County, which people sometimes assume). It’s about 40 kilometres northeast of Nairobi along the Thika Superhighway, and it’s one of the fastest-growing towns in Kenya.
Thika Superhighway
The 8-lane superhighway connecting Thika to Nairobi was completed between 2009 and 2012. It’s part of the A2 Highway (the Cape to Cairo Road). Before the highway, it took about 2 hours to get to Nairobi. Now it’s under 40 minutes. That single project turned Thika from a quiet town into a satellite city, with businesses, industries, and residential estates popping up along the entire corridor.
Thika Greens
A 1,700-acre golf estate with an 18-hole course designed by DDV Group of South Africa. It’s got a 30-room resort, clubhouse, restaurant, spa, and residential community across three phases. The success of Thika Greens put Thika on the map as a place to invest in quality homes, not just industrial land.
Ananas Mall
Modern shopping centre on Thika-Garissa Road, opened in 2015. Over 12,000 square metres with 100+ shops. Java House, Bata, Optica, Galaxy Cinema, KFC. It’s the main retail and entertainment hub for Thika.
Industrial Park
Thika’s industrial base is a big part of why the town keeps growing. Major players include Bidco Oil Refineries, Del Monte Kenya, Broadway Bakery, Kenblest Group, Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers, and KCC. These are major employers that create sustained demand for housing.
Weather
Warm year-round, 21°C to 26°C average. Rainfall around 1,067mm per year with the wettest months in April and November. Great for agriculture, which is why Del Monte set up there for pineapples and why coffee, tea, and macadamia nuts thrive.
